Why EMDR?

So often, trauma plays a role in the recurring patterns that keep us feeling stuck. This may mean single-incident events or complex trauma resulting from repeated experiences of abuse, neglect, or ongoing emotional stress. When these experiences overwhelm the nervous system, the brain may store them in a way that interferes with its natural ability to recover.

When that healing process gets disrupted, symptoms like anxiety, reactivity, and intrusive memories can linger for years. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a safe, highly effective, and evidence-based therapy that helps resolve the impact of past experiences so you can feel calmer, more grounded, and more fully present.

EMDR is endorsed by major health organizations—including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychological Association (APA)—because of its proven effectiveness in treating trauma, anxiety, and a wide range of emotional difficulties. As a Certified EMDR therapist, I have witnessed firsthand how transformative this work can be. It is absolutely possible to release the hold of the past and step into a life that feels aligned, connected, and emotionally steady.

EMDR can be used as a stand-alone therapy or as an adjunct to ongoing talk therapy. During your consultation, we’ll discuss the best approach for your goals and what pace feels right for you.

How EMDR Works

EMDR uses a technique called bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements, tapping, or holding gentle pulsing devices (called TheraTappers)—to activate the brain’s natural healing processes. This helps the brain reprocess difficult memories and reduce the emotional charge connected to them.

You remain awake, aware, and in control throughout the entire experience. EMDR is not hypnosis; it’s a collaborative, structured process designed to help your nervous system shift out of survival mode and into a place of greater ease and clarity.

What to Expect

We begin with an intake session and move forward at a pace that feels safe and steady. Together, we will:

  • Identify what you’re struggling with and what you want to feel instead

  • Develop calming and grounding tools so you feel supported each step of the way

  • Gently process the memories or patterns that feel “stuck”

  • Work collaboratively to create lasting internal change

How Often We Meet

Regular sessions are usually 50–60 minutes scheduled weekly or biweekly. Many clients choose to blend EMDR sessions with traditional talk therapy, depending on what feels most supportive.

For those seeking accelerated progress, I also offer EMDR Intensives—a focused, short-term approach that allows for deeper work in a condensed timeframe. For more about Intensives, click here.

How EMDR Can Help

Research shows that EMDR can help you:

  • Reduce anxiety and chronic stress

  • Feel more grounded and less emotionally reactive

  • Break out of long-standing patterns that no longer serve you

  • Develop clarity, ease, and emotional balance

  • Move forward with greater confidence and resilience

Many clients are surprised by how much relief they feel once their brain has the space to fully process what’s been weighing them down.
